Description
Pencreigiau is a picturesque cottage built in the Tudor style, featuring a double-fronted design with one storey plus an attic. The exterior is constructed of rubble stone, topped with a slate eaves roof and dressed stone end chimneys that have paired diagonally-set stacks. The cottage is adorned with decorative pierced fretted bargeboards throughout.
The entrance front has a central doorway with a Tudor arch, a traceried overlight, and a replica door with vertical panels. Flanking the doorway are broader Tudor-arched windows, each with two pointed lights and small-pane sash glazing. All openings feature stone voussoirs and slate sills. Above each window, there are small gabled dormers with distinctive triangular-headed glazing, which include small-paned 2-light casement pairs with triangular heads and a diagonally-set square pane above. The dormers also have decorative bargeboards and tall finials with pendants.
At the rear, the cottage has camber-headed openings and includes a gabled crosswing with 2-light casement windows on each floor. There is also a range parallel to the main block, featuring a single 2-light casement window, a cut-down chimney breast, and a left return gable end with 2-light casements on each floor and a doorway.
Inside, the entrance hall faces the underside of the stair, which is accessed from the kitchen. To the left is a living room or parlour with window shutters, and to the right is the kitchen, which has a large fireplace. In the corner, an unusual boxed-in stair rises and then divides to provide access to the front and rear upper rooms. Service rooms are located at the rear of the house. The interior retains many period details, including 4- and 6-panelled doors, fireplaces, a kitchen range, and a pump in the rear scullery. In one of the upper rooms, there is a rare lead bath from the early 19th century, set in its original wooden panelled surround.
