Description

This milestone, located approximately 4 metres south-east of Spinkford Bridge, dates from the mid-18th century. It is made of painted sandstone ashlar and has a square-section block that stands about 1/3 metre high. The tooled side facing the road features a black painted 'D10', while the south side has 'S1', indicating directions to Darlington and Staindrop. The north face is incised with 'Darlington 10', and the east face has 'Staindrop 1', both of which are painted white along with the stone itself.
