Timber Loft

The Timber Loft is a medieval and later building located in Durham and Framwellgate, specifically on the north side of The College. It features a timber frame with brick nogging, sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and some brick elements, all topped by a Welsh slate roof. The structure consists of a long loft with a vehicle passage underneath, flanked by storage rooms. It has two loft floors, creating three low storeys, and is likely divided into eight bays.

To the east of the passageway, there is a brick and stone building with side steps on the north leading to an upper loft door. The passageway has a timber-framed north wall with wooden steps leading to the lower loft. The stone-walled section on the west is partly obscured by adjacent buildings. This stone part features louvred 20th-century loft ventilators, a west gable wall with a three-light wood-mullioned ground floor window, and two rows of three blocked triangular ventilation holes arranged alternately. The gable also has a two-light leaded casement window beneath a wood lintel. Inside, large arched trusses support the floors and form the roof over the passageway.
