Description
No. 22 North Bailey is a late 18th-century building that originally comprised two houses and is now used as a hall of residence. It features painted incised stucco with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, and a rainwater head dated 1796 with the initials SC. The building stands three storeys tall and has six bays.
The entrance on the left is a four-panelled door with a patterned overlight, set within a Jacobean-style doorcase that has a cornice. The fourth bay contains a six-panel door with a patterned overlight, also in an architrave with a cornice. The sixth bay has a plainer door with flat panels and a leaded overlight. There is a blocked door in the second bay, and a sash window has been inserted. The fenestration is irregular, featuring sash windows, including one tripartite window with glazing bars, while some bays are blank. The top of the building is finished with a cornice and blocking course.
Inside, there is a late 17th-century staircase with high grip handrails on skittle balusters, although the lower flight of the staircase in the second house on the right has been renewed.
