Description
St. Chad's College, specifically Lightfoot House, is a house that has been converted into a college. It dates from the early 18th century and was raised in the 19th century. The exterior features painted incised stucco with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof and red brick chimneys. The building stands three storeys high with attics and has three windows. There are two internal steps leading up to a six-panel door on the left, which is framed by an architrave under a deep hood. The ground floor has two sashes with glazing bars, which have projecting stone sills, while each upper floor features three late 19th-century sashes. The roof includes two bargeboarded gabled dormers with finials, and there is a boot-scraper recess beside the door, along with two cellar chutes that have iron grilles.
Inside, the building has an open-string staircase on the lower flights, which is closed above. The staircase features a ramped grip handrail supported by vase-and-column balusters and a pulvinated string. The lower dog-leg flights have carved tread ends, and the well above is open. The newels of the staircase are adorned with moulded pendants, and there is a ramped dado rail.
