Description

The war memorial, located to the east of the Cathedral, was built between 1926 and 1928 by C.H. Reilly, with pictorial carving by Tyson Smith. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, it features a tall round column set on a square base topped with a cross finial. The column is intricately carved in spirals that resemble the piers of the cathedral, with triangles within the spirals showcasing low-relief carvings of soldiers' equipment and weapons. The base is inscribed with the years 1914-1918, and the cross consists of four interlaced bands that enclose a carved cross in low relief.
