Description
The Union Society is a building that combines two houses, originally constructed around 1700 and in the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features painted incised stucco on brick, with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, and a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. The building is two storeys tall with attics and has five bays.
In the first bay, there is a six-panel door set in an architrave beneath a pulvinated frieze and cornice, with a central panel above which is a large Venetian window. The third bay contains another six-panel door with a three-pane overlight and a louvred ventilator. The ground floor windows have projecting stone sills and sashes with glazing bars in plain reveals, while the upper floor and attic windows have wide boxes. External shutters are present on two of the right ground floor windows, and narrow inserted windows flank the ground-floor sash in the second bay. A dog-tooth cornice decorates the four right bays, and there are gabled dormers on the left side.
A boot-scraper recess is located beside the left door. The left part of the building is noted for having an exceptionally fine staircase, featuring a moulded wreathed handrail on turned balusters, carved tread ends, and a curtail. It also has a Roman Doric distyle screen that supports a gallery, an Ionic ceiling cornice, and a central rose. The staircase in the right house is simpler, with a high grip handrail on fat balusters and half-balusters at the newels.
