Description

The Chapter Clerk's Office and Chapter Room is a building that originally served as a stable and loft, later becoming a prebendal house and now functioning as offices. It was rebuilt in the late 17th century, specifically known as the 'Loft of the children of the almonry', with further alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The structure is constructed from sandstone rubble with a rendered plinth and painted ashlar dressings, featuring a brick parapet. The left bay is set back and is partly rendered and partly made of ashlar. The roof is not visible.

Located adjacent to College Gate, the building has first and second-floor rooms above the north lodge of the gate. The main elevation facing North Bailey includes a narrow three-storey bay over the lodge, while the southern part has three storeys and five bays, and the northern part, which is the Chapter Room, has two storeys and three bays. The ground floor features three renewed windows that are single-chamfered with two lights, and the first and second floors have raised stone surrounds for the sashes, with glazing bars on the first and second floors, the latter having broad bars. The parapet has a flat stone coping, and the northern part includes a sill and parapet band.

Inside, there are blocked segmental stone arches on the ground floor running across the eastern side of the building. The first floor contains a panelled room in the south-west corner with a corniced chimney piece. The Chapter Room features panelling above a plain dado with a deep rail, panelled shutters, a corniced chimney-piece adorned with oak-leaf and acorn carving, and a stucco ceiling cornice with a central leafy roundel. Other rooms on the eastern side have similar windows and simpler chimneypieces, while the second-floor rooms are partly panelled. The doors throughout the building are either two or six panels, with panelled reveals in the architraves.
