Description
No. 3 The College is a house located on the east side of The College in Durham and Framwellgate. The building's first use is not known, but it is situated on a medieval site and may include some medieval fabric. The structure is primarily from the 18th century, with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a coursed squared sandstone canted bay, with a rendered section on the right. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has brick chimneys. The house is two storeys high with an attic and consists of four bays.
There are side steps leading up to a six-panelled door with a patterned overlight, set in a slender doorcase with a bracketed hood in the second bay. The windows have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with sashes that include glazing bars in the first bay, above the door, and on the first floor of the right end bays. The centre of the right end bay features a boarded door, with horizontal sliding sashes to the left and a sash with vertical glazing bars to the right. The third bay has a prominent two-storey canted projection with stone-mullioned and transomed windows, as well as floor and parapet strings and a steeply-coped parapet. The roof includes a three-light square-headed dormer.
Inside, there is an open-string dog-leg stair with a ramped moulded handrail on column balusters, two per tread, and a rectangular newel and curtail, though it lacks a wreath. The tread ends are patterned except where they are not easily visible. There are Gothic-style alcoves, and the barrel-vaulted cellars have a drain leading to the street, with a cobbled floor.
