Description
St John's College Second Part is a house that has been converted into a college. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made around 1760. Originally a residence for the Bowes family, it underwent changes by the Earl of Strathmore. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with an ashlar plinth, irregular large quoins, and ashlar dressings. It has two storeys and three bays. The ground floor features three sash windows, while the first floor has two sash windows, all with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are particularly fine, with flat stone lintels and sloping stone flag sills. There is a narrow blocked opening on the left side of the first floor.
Inside, the first-floor salon showcases richly carved woodwork around the doors and windows, including an overdoor with a bolection frieze, a carved dado rail, and skirting board. The coved ceiling is adorned with early rococo plasterwork, featuring a central design and an enriched border. Additionally, there is a white marble chimney piece supported by free-standing reeded columns.
