Description
St John's College is a house that has been converted into a college, built in the early 18th century. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with brick chimneys, featuring a basement and three storeys. The building has seven bays, with the central three bays projecting. There are six steps leading up to a central double door, which is renewed and set beneath a large hood supported by carved brackets. The exterior showcases channelled rustication and keyed voussoirs above sash windows that have glazing bars. The basement plinth has cyma-moulded coping, and there is a prominent cornice at the second floor, along with a parapet that has roll moulding beneath a flat top. The roof is hipped, and there are spear-headed area railings with plain handrails.
Inside, the building features a panelled hall with a high-quality open-string staircase. This staircase has a ramped grip handrail supported by slender Doric balusters with bud plinths, and fluted Corinthian newels. The tread ends are delicately carved, and the staircase includes one curved flight and a wide upper gallery. The doors are six-panelled with architraves and deep reveals. The ceiling is adorned with a dentilled cornice and a central leaf rosette surrounded by oak leaves. Originally, this building served as the town house of the Eden family.
