Description
St John's College, part of a house now serving as a college, dates from the late 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a moulded plinth and a Lakeland slate roof with a rendered chimney. The building has three storeys and seven bays. There is an internal step up to the central door, which has six carved panels featuring a Greek fret pattern, set within a wide Tuscan doorcase that includes a central leaf-carved bracket. To the left of the main door is a partly-glazed eight-panel door in a stop-chamfered surround. The main door bears a later inscription reading "ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE LINTON HOUSE." The windows are sashes with glazing bars, projecting stone sills, and flat stone lintels, with ground-floor shutters. The building also has end pilasters, floor bands, and a renewed wooden gutter cornice. Ridge chimneys are located between the second and third bays and at the right end.
Inside, there is a dog-leg stair featuring a panelled balustrade and a flat, moulded handrail with a closed string.
