Description
This building is part of St. John's College and originally served as a house. It dates from the 17th century but was refronted in 1862, as indicated by the date on the left gable. The structure is made of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the left return gable is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof with stone gable coping and a brick chimney, all designed in the Tudor style.
The building has three storeys and three irregular bays. The near-central entrance consists of a renewed double door, and there are sloping stone sills with hollow-chamfered reveals for a sash window on the left. To the right, there are paired sash windows with stone mullions, both featuring broach-stopped label moulds. The first floor has paired sashes with a sill string and a stepped drip string. The steeply-pitched roof is hipped on the left and has slightly swept eaves.
On the rear elevation, there is a flat Tudor-arched stone surround for a heavy door, along with 17th-century brickwork. This building was part of the town house of the Bowes family.
