Description
No. 8 The College is a Grade I listed building in Durham, originally of unknown use and now functioning as a house. It dates back to the medieval period and has undergone alterations. The structure is built from sandstone, featuring a mix of coursed and squared stone as well as some rubble, with ashlar dressings. The roof is stone-flagged and has brick chimneys. The building has two storeys and attics, comprising four wide bays. The entrance is located in the adjacent gable of No. 7 to the left. On the right side, there are three wide double-chamfered, two-centred arches supported by two round columns and an octagonal corbel. The left bay features two superimposed relieving arches. A renewed boarded door on the left has an overlight and a flat stone lintel. The arches are filled with snecked masonry and have renewed windows. At the rear, there is a horizontal sliding sash window with wide glazing bars on the ground floor. Inside, the building features stop-chamfered arched tie-beams with end and central peg-holes, and the area immediately above is ceiled.
