Description
The Chorister School is a house that dates back to the medieval period, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a brick section on the right side. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a brick chimney. The building has three storeys and four irregular bays.
The entrance, located in the third bay, features a six-panelled door set within a Gibbs surround, flanked by sash windows that have plain stone surrounds. There are similar stone surrounds for the sashes to the left. Above the door, there is a tripartite sash window with three relieving arches. On the second floor, four small sash windows are topped with flat stone lintels and have projecting painted stone sills. The wooden gutter is supported by stone brackets, and the hipped roof has a brick chimney at the left end, which is partly rendered. A painted coat of arms is displayed above the door, and a gas lamp hangs on a wrought-iron bracket to the left of the entrance.
Inside, the very wide panelled hall features a cut-string open-well staircase with a ramped, moulded handrail supported by turned balusters that have plinths sloped to match the angle of the stair. The hall also has a ramped panelled dado, a wide wreath and curtail, and some panelled square newels that have been reused. The ceiling of the hall is adorned with much 18th-century stucco decoration, including a dentilled cornice and reeded circular panels.
