Description

6 The College is a Grade II* listed building located in Durham and Framwellgate. Originally a granary, it was later converted into a prebendal house. The structure dates back to medieval times, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of roughly-squared coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a basement and two storeys with seven bays.

The building has five bays that are flanked by buttresses with offsets, while the two bays on the right contain a wide segmental arch in the basement. The main block features a doorway with a shouldered lintel and a blocked arch made of thin stones in the basement. There are two flights of wide steps leading up to a six-panel door in the third bay, which is set within a wide architrave topped with a prominent cornice. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, flat stone lintels, and flat stone sills. A roll-moulded parapet and moulded round rainwater heads with lugged drainpipe fixings are also present. To the right of the door, a wrought-iron bracket supports a round gas lamp, which has gablets over vents and a conical top. The wrought-iron handrails feature some water-leaf decoration.

Inside, the basement has a chamfered corbel course that supports a barrel vault, and inserted walls may conceal original columns. The ground floor includes a panelled room with Tuscan pilasters, bar-stopped chamfers on moulded beams, and a flat-Tudor-arched chimney piece. A dog-leg stair on the right has a single lower flight, with an open string and a ramped moulded wreathed handrail supported by slender turned balusters and a column newel at the curtail. A plain dado is also present, and there is another panelled room on the first floor.
