Description
No. 193 is a mid-18th century house located on the south side of Gilesgate in Durham and Framwellgate. The building is constructed of stucco and features a Welsh slate roof with a brick chimney. It has a double span design, standing two storeys high with two bays. The entrance consists of a four-panelled door set within an architrave in the first bay, accompanied by a small sash window to the left. Above, there is a sash window in a wide box. To the right, a two-storey canted bay has a hipped roof, with wood mullions supporting fixed lights on the ground floor and sashes above.
The steeply-pitched roof is finished with an end brick chimney and rendered gable coping. Inside, there is a brick barrel-vaulted cellar beneath the entrance passage. The principal room at the rear on the ground floor features a chimney piece with a dentilled cornice, a later cast iron grate, and floral tiled panels. Full-height pilasters frame a window with splayed panelled reveals and a panelled seat. A wave-patterned dado rail runs continuously around the room and over the pilasters, while a wide stucco cornice with a floral pattern adds to the decorative details. Some six-panelled doors are present, including one with L hinges.
