Description
West New Houses Barn, located 25 metres west of West New Houses Farmhouse, is a barn that likely dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of squared rubble and features a stone-flagged roof.
The barn is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with flush quoins. The side facing the former farmhouse has an external stone stairway that leads to an off-centre Dutch door. This door is surrounded by flush jambs, top blocks, and a wide lintel. The roof has coped gables. The partly rebuilt gabled right return includes a doorway with roughly-shaped jambs and a large cambered lintel. The left return gable has pigeon holes and ledges arranged in a triangular pattern. At the rear, there is a central opening flanked by boarded doors: to the right is a 19th-century flush door surround, while the left has an earlier surround with flush jambs, top blocks, and a wide lintel. There is also a central opening on the first floor.
This barn is included for its group value.
