Description

30 and 32 Galgate is a house that was later converted into a public house and is now divided into a house, shop, and flat, with an entrance to an auction mart. This late 18th-century building underwent alterations around 1870, particularly to the left part, which was made into a separate house. The structure is built of coursed squared sandstone with painted ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with stone ridge and gable coping, as well as stone chimneys.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a four-window range. The left two-bay section, altered in the Gothic style around 1870, has steps leading up to an eight-panel door with a shaped overlight, set in a chamfered shouldered surround with alternate-block jambs. Above the door is an iron bar. To the right of the door, there is a canted bay window with chamfers and run-off stops, topped with a steeply-pitched stone slate hipped roof. The third bay features a segmental vehicle arch with a projecting keystone and voussoirs, leading to boarded double doors. Next to this is a low stone surround for a six-panel door. The shop front on the right includes tiled stall risers, a projecting square bay, and a half-glazed right door, with a fascia that breaks forward over a folding canopy supported by hinged iron stays. The first floor has plain sashes in the bay window, with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, and the lintels are positioned against the eaves. The low-pitched roof has gable coping at the right end, with a chamfered section over an eroded kneeler, and features chimneys at the central and right ends with bands. The interior has not been inspected.
