Description

The Bottom Lock and Bridge on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is a lock chamber built from rubble, featuring tooled sandstone copings and quoins. There is a rebate for a removed lock gate to the northeast, with a small bridge located beyond it. The structure includes a segmental arch made of stone voussoirs. The southwest parapet is straight, while the northeast side is humped, with cemented copings. An iron plate on the northeast side reads ‘Gwasted No. 2 Bridge’. This bridge supports a track leading to a field gate. On the southeast side, there is a deep stone-lined overflow ditch, and at the southwest end, a rubble weir is present, accompanied by splayed retaining walls beyond.
