Description
The Main Barrack Block, including the Regimental HQ at Raglan Barracks, is a building designed in a Simple Classical style, likely influenced by the works of Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren. This long, two-storey symmetrical structure is constructed from rock-faced, coursed red sandstone with freestone dressings, which include a first-floor sill band, voussoir lintels, and a ‘sparrow-picked’ plinth. The building features a renewed slate roof with wide boarded eaves.
The front façade has a design of 17+5+17 bays, centered on an advanced and pedimented section that includes a freestone bellcote with round arched openings and a pedimented cap topped with a cannonball weathervane inscribed with ‘ORD’. There is a clock face located in the central roundel of the pediment. The windows are 12-pane sashes, some horned, and many on the ground floor are fitted with metal bars. The doors are mostly boarded with 3-pane overlights, and steps lead to the right-hand doorways due to the slope of the ground.
The pediment treatment is also reflected on the four-bay gable ends, which feature blind roundels. The left-hand gable has paired central entrances, one of which is blocked, while the right-hand gable has steps leading up to a single central door. The rear of the building is similar, with a central pediment and end lean-tos, constructed from plain rubble masonry rather than rock-faced stone, and includes rebuilt projecting toilets. The Main Barrack Block is linked to a parallel low stone range.
