Description

Gwastad Bridge spans the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and includes a lock chamber to the north. This bridge, which carries a public footpath, features a single arch made of rubble with a segmental arch composed of stone voussoirs. The northern side has stone slab coping, while the southern side has cement coping. A stone plaque is set into the northern parapet, commemorating the restoration that took place in 1974. The southern side has splayed revetments, and the northern parapet walls extend as a retaining wall for the lock platform. An iron plaque on the southern face of the bridge identifies it as 'Gwastad No. 26 Bridge'. The lock chamber is also constructed of rubble and has sandstone copings, with lock gates that were installed in 1974. An overflow culvert is located to the east, and a towpath runs along the western side of the bridge.
