Description
Malpas Vicarage is a house consisting of two blocks, both roughly in an L-plan shape. The front block, built in 1887, is two storeys high, while the steeply-roofed rear block, which was remodelled in 1861 in a slightly picturesque style, is single storey plus attic. The building is constructed from red and green sandstone rubble, with Bathstone detailing, including the windows. The roofs are made of artificial slate, and the eaves are deep. There are projecting chimney-breasts on the south and east gables of the front block, as well as on the west gable of the rear block. The east and west chimney stacks have been rebuilt in brick, while the south stack is made of rubble. There is a ridge stack located towards the centre of the rear wing.
The main entrance is located within a gabled turret at the northwest corner of the front block, facing east. It features a four-centred door with a Bathstone surround and a panelled door. Above the door is a Bathstone lancet window, with another lancet window at attic level. To the left of the entrance is an advanced gable with a shouldered chimney-breast. To the right of the entry is the two-bay elevation of the rear block, which has two large dormer windows with arched heads and simple Y-traceried timber glazing. There is a wide casement window on the ground floor to the left and a door to the right.
The south front has a slightly advanced gable to the left with a chimney-breast. On the first floor, there is a two-light mullioned window to the right of the chimney, with a modernised window below. The wall to the left of the chimney is rendered. The right half of the elevation features a first-floor window similar to the one above, and a four-light transom and mullion window below. All the glazing has been replaced with plastic. The west elevation faces the lawn and includes a two-bay elevation of the front block to the right. The first-floor windows are similar to those on the south front, with the left one featuring latticed glazing. There is a four-light transom and mullion window on the ground floor to the right and a smaller window to the left. To the left is the steep gable of the rear block, which has a projecting shouldered chimney, with a single light upper window on each side featuring latticed glazing, and a single light ground floor window.
Inside the main room of the rear block, there are six-panel doors and a large chimney-breast with a modern grate. The roof of the rear block features rough A-frame timbers. The front block has a dog-leg staircase with chamfered balusters and scrolled tread-ends.
