Description

Nos. 17-21 Monkswell Road form a terrace of houses built of roughly coursed red sandstone rubble, with ashlar window dressings and Welsh slate roofs. The houses date from the 19th century and are double-depth, with a double-fronted appearance to No. 21. They are three storeys high, each with two windows. The ground floor and first floor windows are contained within two-storey canted bays with slate roofs. These windows are 2-over-2 pane sashes flanked by 1-over-1 panes, set in ashlar frames with Caernarvon heads. A gabled hood, supported by brackets, shelters the front doorway. The window directly above the door is a 2-over-2 pane sash with a stone Caernarvon head and brick jambs. The upper floor windows are paired 2-over-2 pane sashes with stone heads and a central mullion, but with brick jambs. These are set within a wall-head gabled half dormer featuring scalloped bargeboards. The roof has a low pitch and four ridge stacks serving the terrace. The left-hand gable of No. 17 has three 2-over-2 pane sashes, while the right-hand gable of No. 21 has a single window on the ground and second floors. The rear elevation was not visible during inspection. The interior of the properties was not inspected.
