Description

The Royal British Legion occupies two houses, Nos. 10 and 12 Nevill Street. They were built in the 18th century, though the two houses exhibit clearly different designs despite sharing a broad fascia band. The front elevations are rough rendered and painted, topped by natural slate roofs. The properties are three storeys high, with five windows across the whole front.

No. 10 has two windows and a modern entrance. The ground floor features a tripartite window with three 6 over 6 pane sash windows. The first floor has 6 over 6 pane sash windows, and the second floor has 3 over 3 pane sash windows. No. 12 has two ground floor bays with 8 over 8 pane sash windows flanked by 2 over 2, with a blocked entrance between the bays. The first floor of No. 12 has 6 over 6 pane sash windows, while the second floor has 3 over 6 pane sash windows. Above the centre first floor window is a round majolica plaque depicting cherubs playing musical instruments, in a style reminiscent of della Robbia. Plain roofs are topped by a ridge stack situated between the two houses.

The interior has undergone significant alterations, particularly on the ground floor, during its 20th century conversion into club premises. A 20th century staircase has been installed, and the upper floors have been converted into flats. The two properties have been combined into one building. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
