Description

18 and 19 Monmouth Place are two houses that have been combined into one commercial property. They date from the late 18th century and early 19th century, with some 20th-century additions. The buildings are constructed of painted ashlar with pantile roofs.

The exterior is divided into two parts, with No. 18 set back in two bays from the later, three-bay No. 19, which is stepped forward. All windows are plain sashes. No. 18 features gabled roofs with the rear half lower than the front, a small square sash window at the second floor, balconettes at the first floor, and at the ground floor, there is a flanking 20th-century panelled door with a slab hood on brackets, along with a basement cover to the left. It has a plinth, a platband above the ground floor, a cavetto cornice above the first floor, and a small cornice with a blocking course and parapet, which returns to the left gable where there is a stack, with another stack at the right end. The return has a sash window above a 20th-century door.

No. 19 has three plain sash windows above two with a blind centre light at the ground floor, a central three-light window, and a further single window on each side, along with a single light on the return to the left. It features a plinth, sill platbands on the first and second floors, and a frieze band at the eaves. This unit also has a wing at the rear.

The interiors have not been inspected, but it is reported that they have been largely reconstructed with the introduction of much steelwork. Monmouth Place was the main route west to Bristol before the cutting through of Charlotte Street, and these properties are among the few remaining from the late 18th century on the north side.
