Description
17A Monmouth Place is a small terraced house and shop built in the early 19th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible. The house has a very small trapezoidal plan, likely built alongside No. 22 Charlotte Street to complete the corner.
The exterior features four storeys with a single window on each floor. The upper floors have a small plain sash window above a six-over-six sash window on the first and second floors. The ground floor includes an original square display window with a glazed door and a shallow transom light. The return at the acute angle is plain. There is a sill band at the first floor, and a cornice with a blocking course and parapet that continues with No. 22.
Inside, there is a stone staircase with a Doric newel, but little else of interest was noted during the inspection in 1980. The building is included for its group value.
