Description

The Old Custom House is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a five-bay facade facing west. The exterior is finished in stucco with some bathstone dressings, showcasing a rusticated ground floor and corner pilasters. It has a modern hipped Mansard roof with square corner chimneys topped with cornices. A stone cornice and parapet display the inscription 'Custom House'.

On the first floor, the windows have square-headed sashes but are surrounded by round-headed shouldered surrounds with keystones, and there is a cornice at sill level. The ground floor windows are camber-headed and feature tall keystones. The central doorway has a segmental pediment supported by paired tall brackets on tall plinths, leading to a round-headed entrance doorway with a keystone.

The asymmetrical north front is divided by banded pilasters into six bays, with windows arranged in groups of 3+1+3+1+1, including a blank space. It features square classicising chimneys and, to the right, an attic lunette framed by squat pilasters with scrolls and a low entablature. The first floor has round-headed windows with horned and keystoned surrounds, and a cornice at sill level. The rusticated ground floor has round-headed windows with keystones, and to the left, there is a doorway beneath a modern canopy flanked by round-headed windows. The second bay features a Venetian window, while the remaining ground floor windows are round-headed with keystones, all having aprons below the sills with keystone-like decoration.

The east return of the building has its storeys articulated by channeling in the render and features five round-headed windows on each floor. To the right, there are single windows, while to the left, groups of four windows have a simplified treatment.
