Description
Barclay's Bank is a three-storey building featuring a five-bay ashlar front with rounded corners. It has steeply pitched slate roofs and tall chimneys topped with corniced caps and necking bands. The outer bays have balustraded parapets that return to the side elevations. A modillion cornice sits above a plain frieze, and there are moulded architraves throughout.
The outer bays are distinguished by half-round Corinthian columns that rise from bases at the first-floor sill level. The second floor has moulded shouldered architraves framing two-light windows, with sash windows flanking central mullions. The first floor features cross windows with inset sashes and moulded architraves. Triangular pediments adorn the centre and outer bays, each with balustraded balconies, while flat labels are present above the other windows.
The right end elevation has similar detailing and consists of two bays. The ground floor has a plain entablature over a channelled surface with a plinth. The advanced outer bays are accented by Ionic quarter columns at the angles, with the centre bays featuring round-arched windows framed by rusticated architraves, stressed quoins, and a continuous impost band. A sill band is also present, although it has modern glazing. The central doorway is flanked by Ionic half columns on bases, with cavetto reveals and a fanlight above a modern name board that sits over panelled double doors.
