Description

Soar Maes-yr-haf Congregational Chapel, built in 1864, is an Independent Chapel located on the site of an earlier chapel from 1769. The building features a three-bay classical front made of squared, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. It has vermiculated rusticated quoins and a moderately pitched slate roof that is hipped at the rear. The open timber pediment has a plain returned entablature on the outer bays, with the frieze displaying the lettering "INDEPENDENT CHAPEL." The center bay is recessed and features a depressed rusticated arch that rests on the entablature of the outer bays. An inset stone tablet reads "MAES-YR-HAF, BUILT 1769, REBUILT 1864."

The chapel has a stepped tripartite gallery window, with the center light being broader and featuring moulded arches, plain pilasters on brackets, and a sill band. The round arched doorway has a rusticated architrave, double doors, and framed panels. The outer bays have tall round arched two-light windows with rusticated architraves. The side elevations have five windows, with tall round arched two-light windows set in stepped recesses, featuring stressed keystones, impost and sill bands, and a plinth.

At the rear, there is a two-storey, two-window schoolroom that has similar fenestration. The ground floor window has a rusticated architrave, and there is a similar detail on the doorway to the right. The front of the chapel features a raised railed forecourt, which is accompanied by a burial ground to the east. The forecourt has good ironwork railings with barley twist principal rods and a stone base, along with tall stone gatepiers with tooled caps and contemporary iron double gates. The interior of the chapel is galleried.
