Description
Llay Miners Welfare Institute is a two-storey building featuring painted pebbledash elevations with a freestone plinth, channelled pilasters, and a bracket cornice. The roofs are covered in green slate, with the main section being hipped and topped with an octagonal bellcote. It has roughcast chimney stacks adorned with dentil cornices. The front of the building is symmetrical, with five central bays that include a balustraded parapet. The central bay is emphasized by a segmental pediment and a full-width portico, which is flanked by projecting gable-ended cross wings that have a semi-pediment treatment. Each end has a single bay set back, featuring similar parapets.
The first-floor windows in the central section are small pane, round-arched, divided into three lights, and have lugged architraves, keystones, and aprons. The gabled bays also have Venetian windows on the first floor with bracket cills, while the ground floor features cross-frame windows with voussoirs and bracket cills. The portico has a balustraded parapet with a dentil cornice and is supported by paired Doric columns at the ends and center, flanking a modern entry. The extreme end bays have panelled double doors and Venetian windows on their side elevations. The long hipped roof section has three-window end elevations with round-arched and cross-frame windows similar to those on the front, although some are blocked on the right side.
The grand rear elevation, which has been partly obscured by a later single-storey extension, consists of seven bays with channelled deep pilasters. The central three bays are stepped up and ornamented with a balustraded parapet and urns. The first-floor windows on the rear elevation retain their small pane glazing intact. Inside, there are semicircular arches in the ground and first-floor corridors, and the staircase features panelled newels.
