Description
The Former Llay Hall Colliery Washery Building is a notable example of early washery construction, featuring brick panels supported by a bolted and riveted steel frame that is exposed on the facade. This framed design allowed for the support of vibrating machinery and provided flexible internal use. The building has square-headed metal framed windows, some of which were added during its conversion. It has an irregular shape with rail and conveyor access, and it is built into sloping ground with varying numbers of storeys. The overall plan is an oblong layout aligned from north-west to south-east. At the north-west end, there is a two-storey section with a gable facing the front, while the south-east end features a four-storey block with two transverse gables, one larger and higher than the other. On the north-east side, the building extends over a former rail line for hopper loading. A rare surviving section of covered conveyor route, which includes a concrete ramp and a steel frame supporting a segmental roof, slopes down to ground level at the northern corner of the building. Inside, the space has been divided into workshops, stores, and offices.
