Description
Llay Hall Farm is a building featuring pebbledashed stone with some exposed timber-framing, topped with a slate roof and pebbledashed chimneys. It stands two to three stories high, with a cross wing that has stone copings on the gable ends, one of which still has a ball finial. At the front, there is a three-story projecting gabled wing on the left, with an additional gable on the right-hand return. The main hall range is set at right angles, and the roof has been modified to accommodate an inserted upper floor, with a 20th-century entrance. A later extension is attached to the right side, and the return elevation features a decorative arch-braced crown post truss that is partially visible in the gable end.
The rear part of the cross wing has a lower two-story stone-built range with a hipped roof and a large external stack on the rear elevation. The left-hand return elevation of the cross wing has two tall external chimneys. During the inspection in 1995, only the cross wing was accessible. The interior is arranged in a three-unit layout: the central room contains a winding stair, the front room has an oak stair with solid treads and an early 18th-century bolection moulded door, and the rear room, likely a former kitchen, is accessed through an arched sandstone doorway. The ceilings feature heavy chamfered and stopped spine beams. The hall is said to have a sphere truss reduced to one bay, with the aisles featuring open panelling; it is noted that the lower part of the truss may have been removed.
