Description

Castle School and School House is a single-storey building constructed from squared rubble stone with yellow brick dressings and slate roofs. The original structure features a limestone plinth, west end quoins, and coping to a shouldered gable. On the west side, there is one window, while the south wall has four identical windows with a porch situated between the first and second windows. The windows have limestone sills, and the original ones are surrounded by yellow brick with cambered heads, featuring 3-light mullion-and-transom glazing with unusually large diamond panes.

In 1887, the third window was replaced by a large gable that includes two tall windows, and a cross-wing was added to the right end. The porch has a coped shouldered gable, a yellow-brick Tudor-arched front, and grey limestone sides, along with a ledged door. The original windows have yellow-brick surrounds, while the 1887 window consists of two very tall cambered-headed small-paned windows with a centre mullion and two transoms. The gable features plain bargeboards and yellow-brick surrounds.

The cross-wing has yellow-brick quoins, a door with a slate pent hood in the angle, and triple cambered-headed windows in the gable, with the centre window being larger. The east wall has two windows and a side-wall stack. At the rear, facing Bailey Street, there is an integrated two-storey schoolhouse with exposed masonry, including quoins at the angle and yellow brick dressings. The window frames and door have been altered, and the gabled end is rendered.
