Description
Kidwelly Bridge, also known as Pont Cydweli, is a two-arch bridge made of rubble stone, dating from the early 20th century. It features coursed rock-faced rubble facing on both sides, with stone voussoirs forming segmental arches, a string course, and a parapet. The parapet is topped with tooled limestone coping and has four raised piers, each capped with tooled limestone.
The bridge is supported by a large central pier that has substantial cutwaters on both sides, into which the arches of the various bridge widenings are integrated. The cutwater extends slightly beyond the face of the final widening and rises to just below the parapet coping. The underside of the bridge clearly shows the line of widening on both sides. The original southern arch is pointed, while the northern arch is rounded, both of which connect into the main part of the central pier. The widening features segmental arches from the cutwater, suggesting that the original bridge may have had cutwaters that served as pedestrian refuges.
