Description
The Town Gate is a Grade II* listed rubble stone ruinous gateway, which forms the front and side walls of a substantial gatehouse that shows evidence of three storeys. It features a broad segmental-pointed main arch with four steps, which is chamfered at the front, and includes a portcullis slot located between the second and third steps. The left side is partially hidden by a public house but has a corbelled chimney breast on the first floor. The upper floor has three broad cambered-headed windows, likely serving a principal hall, although these have been robbed of ashlar. On the right side, there are two narrow first-floor lancets, also robbed of ashlar, and two ground-floor loops. The southwest angle is chamfered and has a spur foot. The south wall has mostly collapsed, while the north wall remains standing to full height, with a short return of the inner east wall still visible.
The rear of the front wall and the rear of the north wall contain numerous window and fireplace embrasures, including two blocked lancets on the north side. Originally, the gateway was stone vaulted.
