Description
Kidwelly Castle is a Grade I listed structure built from rubble stone, primarily consisting of millstone grit boulders with sandstone and some Sutton limestone used for dressings. The castle features a massive twin-towered south gatehouse. To the west, there is a semi-circular outer ward wall that has four towers, one of which has collapsed. The square inner ward is surrounded by four corner towers, connected by straight stretches of curtain wall to the southeast corner of the gatehouse and the northeast end of the outer ward wall. The southwest tower includes a domed vault. There is a hall located against the east side of the inner ward. A fine polygonal-ended chapel projects east from the southeast tower of the inner ward, accompanied by a cross-gabled sacristy tower to the south. The kitchen, dating from around 1500, is situated in the southwest corner. In the outer ward, there are two large gabled ranges: the Tudor Hall, located against the west wall of the inner ward and dating from around 1500, and another range in the northeast corner, north of the northeast tower of the inner ward, which is likely of the same period.
