Description

Campton Lower School and Schoolhouse is a school and schoolhouse built in 1875. It is constructed of yellow brick with stone dressings and features a clay tile roof adorned with bands of fishscale tiles and ridge cresting. The building has a complex plan, with the school located to the south as a single-storey structure, while the schoolhouse to the north is also one storey but includes attics. The overall shape of the building is roughly L-shaped.

On the road elevation, the school is on the left-hand side. The left-hand projecting gable has two 2-light mullion and transom windows, along with small paired lights at the apex. The right-hand block features a plank door with strap hinges beneath a cambered head, a 5-light mullioned window, and a square bell-cote topped with a sprocketed pyramidal roof.

The schoolhouse is on the right-hand side. Its left-hand projecting gable has a canted bay on the ground floor and a 2-light window above. The right-hand block includes a plank door set within the angle under a hipped tiled hood, a 2-light window on the ground floor, and a gabled dormer above with a 2-light window. All windows are mullioned. There are paired octagonal stacks with moulded cornices located at the rear of the right-hand block and at the side of the left-hand block where it meets the school. All gables are topped with stone coping.
