Description

Cwmdu Mawr Farmhouse is an L-plan farmhouse that dates back to the 17th century. It stands two storeys high with a cellar and features a roughcast front with three widely spaced bays beneath a slate roof. Originally, it had end stacks, but the right end stack has been removed. The farmhouse has four-pane sash windows, and there are steps leading up to a doorway that has a 20th-century door. The ground floor right window is set further in than the one above it, and there is a cellar opening to the left. The right end wall is made of rubble stone and is above an attached service range, which is a lower two-storey structure with a four-pane sash window on each floor, positioned left of centre, and a right end stack. The left end wall is also made of rubble stone and features an attic window.

At the rear, there is a full-height wing with whitewashed rubble walls, a battered base, and a brick end stack. The front wall has two doors, and there is a lean-to at the rear.

The interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey, but in 1981 it was noted to have a probably late 17th-century staircase with a closed and pulvinated string, newels with finials and pendants, and balusters that were covered over. The first floor had 17th-century doors in a Jacobean style, featuring round-arched panels with strapwork motifs. The ground floor had cased ceiling beams. The cellar and roof trusses were not inspected, and the farmhouse was in deteriorating condition at the time of the resurvey.
