Description

East Saltoun is an L-plan farmhouse that dates from the earlier to mid-18th century. It was dwarfed around 1920 when it became the rear wing of a new farmhouse built at right angles to it.

The main wing, constructed around 1920, is a two-storey building with five bays. It is made of rubble sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and chamfered reveals on the principal west elevation. The central doorway has a fanlight and a panelled door, topped by a corbelled gabled porch. Regular windows are found in the flanking bays on the first floor. The rear elevation includes a stair window at the centre above a small understair window, with the original farmhouse to the right and a window on each floor in the outer left bay. The south elevation has a door at the centre and a window to the right. The glazing pattern is primarily sash and case, with 6-pane upper panels and 2-pane lower panels. The roof is covered with grey slates and terracotta ridge tiles, and the stacks are raised in brick.

The rear wing, dating from the earlier to mid-18th century, was originally three bays running east to west but was reduced to two bays around 1920 due to the addition of the new farmhouse to the west. It features harl pointed rubble with stugged red sandstone dressings. The south side has two bays, with a low doorway to the left and a later window to the right, along with two small first-floor windows under the eaves. Farm buildings are attached to the east elevation. The first-floor windows have 4-pane glazing, while the ground floor windows have 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there is a stack at the east end.

The property also includes grey rubble retaining walls to the east, which are coped with rubble and supported by large rubble buttresses. The roadside to the west features ashlar coped rubble walls, along with simple wrought-iron gates that have moulded cast-iron posts.
