Description

8 Main Street in East Saltoun is a group of three semi-detached houses built in 1931, likely by Peddie and Walker Todd. These single-storey homes feature attics and steeply pitched half-mansard roofs. The houses have modern pivot sash windows, a brick base course, harling, and grey slate roofs.

The eastern elevation consists of six bays that are mirrored around the center. The two outer bays project at the ground level beneath the sweeping eaves of the mansard roof. There is a doorway in the penultimate bay, flanked by a small window in the outer bay. The central bays are recessed and break through the mansard, with windows on each floor.

The western elevation has four bays, with doorways located in the central bays and windows in the outer bays.

On the northern and southwestern elevations, there are gabled features. The chimney breast is corbelled above ground level at the center, although the stack has unfortunately been removed. There is a glazed slit at ground level in the center, with a window flanking it for the attic. The mutual gable stack remains intact.

For houses 6 and 7, the eastern elevation also has six bays that are mirrored at the center. Four advanced M-gabled bays break through the main mansard at the center. Doorways are located in the penultimate bays, each with a simple bracketed slab canopy. There are windows on each floor in the center bays, while the recessed outer bays are blank.

The western elevation is two-storey, with a lower pitch on the mansard roof.

The northern and southern elevations feature a lop-sided gable with a mansard roof to the east, and there is a set-off chimney breast leading to the stack, along with a ground floor window to the east.
