The Old Castle, East Saltoun

The Old Castle in East Saltoun is an earlier 18th century, three-storey house with a long rectangular plan that is one room deep and features three widely spaced bays. At the rear, there is a single-storey projection with a piend roof. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, some droved repairs, and some stugged areas.

The west elevation is symmetrical, featuring a doorway with a small pane fanlight, flanked by windows. The first floor has smaller windows, and there are six-pane windows under the eaves.

On the east elevation, there is a piend-roofed projection, possibly a former stable, located to the outer left, which has garage doors. A pedestrian door has been blocked and converted into a window on the return, with an additional window nearby. The centre and outer bays have ground floor windows, with a square window at the centre of the first floor and a regular window in the outer bay. There is also a small window under the eaves at the centre.

The south elevation features a window on both the first and second floors to the left.

The building predominantly has 12-pane sash and case glazing, with pantile roofs that include slate easing courses. The ashlar coped skews and end stacks are also notable features.

Additionally, there are rubble coped retaining walls to the east and west of the property.
