Description

Stockaton is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 18th century, likely built on the site of an earlier house, with a datestone from 1637 reset in the southwest wall. The building features squared stone rubble construction, with slate hanging above the ground floor at the front. It has a slate roof with hipped ends and a gabled stone rubble stack at the rear, along with another stone rubble stack on the ridge of the rear projecting wing.

Although the interior was not inspected, the house appears to have a symmetrical two-room plan with a central stair hall. The stairs are located at the rear in a stair tower that forms an angle with a contemporary rear wing, resulting in an overall L-shaped plan. This wing is likely the kitchen and shares a back-to-back stack with the lower end room. The higher end room is heated by a projecting rear lateral stack.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with a symmetrical five-window front. The ground floor features four early 20th-century two-light casements, likely in original openings that may have originally contained sash windows, with four panes per light beneath dressed stone segmental arches. There is a partly glazed central door and a string course above the ground floor. The first floor has five similar windows.

The left-hand hipped end includes a late 19th-century two-storey lean-to extension. In the hipped end of the rear wing, there are two early 19th-century sashes with ten over fifteen panes and timber lintels, while the first floor has two early 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes. The interior was not inspected due to restricted access at the time of the survey. Stockaton is a notable example of a pre-double depth plan, maintaining a conservative layout while presenting a symmetrical and contemporary elevation.
