Description
SOUTH HILL SX 37 SW 2/233 Stockaton GV II
Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C18, probably on site of earlier house, datestone 1637 W reset in wall to south west. Squared stone rubble, slate-hung above ground floor on front. Slate roof with hipped ends. Gabled stone rubble rear lateral stack with further stone rubble stack on ridge in rear projecting wing. Although interior not inspected the house appears to have a symmetrical 2-room plan with central stair hall, with the stairs at the rear in a stair tower in the angle with a contemporary rear wing at the lower end. Producing an overall L-shaped plan. The wing is probably the kitchen wing and shares a back to back stack with lower end room. The higher end room is heated by a projecting rear lateral stack. 2 storeys, symmetrical 5-window front. Ground floor with four 2-light early C20 casements probably in original openings which might have originally contained sashes. 4-panes per light beneath dressed stone segmental arches. Partly glazed central door. String above ground floor. First floor with 5 similar windows. Left-hand hipped end with late C19 2-storey lean-to extension. In hipped end of rear wing, 2 early C19 10 over 15-pane sashes with timber lintels. First floor with 2 early C19 16-pane sashes. Interior not inspected. Thorough access not permitted at time of survey. This is a very good example of a pre double depth plan and conservative in this respectbut symmetrical and up to date in elevation.
