Description
This outbuilding, located at the northeast corner of the front yard at Brownslate Farm, is of uncertain origin but is possibly from the 16th century and largely dates from the 19th century. It is a small lofted structure built of rubble stone and topped with an asbestos tile roof. The lower floor features a vaulted ceiling made of rough stone, typical of late medieval buildings in the area, measuring approximately 2 meters wide, 2.2 meters high, and 4.5 meters long.
There is a door at the west end with a timber lintel, and outside steps to the right lead to a loft door, also with a timber lintel. The masonry includes some red brick. The roof timbers are from the 19th century. The south wall is blank and has a ruinous walled enclosure. The east gable features six tiers of dove holes surrounding a brick-framed window, while there is one loop opening to the lower floor. The north side wall has three tiers of dove holes and two loop openings below.
This outbuilding contains an unexplained stone-vaulted chamber that appears to be of a single date with the floor above, although the windows and doors seem to be from the 19th century. It is part of a well-preserved farm group.
