Description

This free-standing outbuilding at Village Farm incorporates remains of Marcross Castle and is part of the now vanished Castle Farm. It consists of two adjoining sections.

The older, northeast portion dates from the late 13th century or early 14th century and was rebuilt as a 17th-century outbuilding. It was re-roofed in the 19th century and features medieval walling on its southeast, northeast, and northwest sides, which includes remnants of Marcross Castle. The battered northwest wall has a blocked, chamfered doorway with a four-centred head. The northeast gable has two ventilators with splayed internal reveals, but externally features cross-loops, one of which is blocked, along with a blocked loft door above them. The southeast elevation includes a ventilator slit, a vehicular entry, a blocked ground floor doorway, and a loft opening. Inside, there is a four-bay roof supported by 19th-century trusses, and an internal stone dividing wall separates the northeast and southwest parts of the outbuilding.

The southwest portion likely represents a 19th-century rebuilding, possibly constructed above medieval footings. Its southeast elevation features yellow brick segmental heads above the openings, with partly blocked window openings on each side of the door opening. The southwest gable end has steps leading to a loft opening with a brick head, while the northwest elevation contains blocked openings with wooden lintels.
