Description
Crow's Nest, located at No 4 The Cross, is a small, one and a half storey croglofft cottage dating from the 18th century. The exterior features white-painted random-rubble walls and a roof covered with small slates, which has flush eaves and a stone end-chimney shared with No 3, complete with deep flaunching. The front of the cottage has a boarded door slightly to the right of centre, topped with a wall-plate lintel. To the left of the door is a small 2-light casement window, while to the right is a larger window that includes a small 1-2-1-light bay window, both of which are from the 20th century. There are also two small roof-lights, one on the left side of the roof and another above the door.
Inside, there is a small inner lobby with a narrow railed stair on the left side that leads to a low croglofft bedroom. A ledged door opens into the kitchen/living room, which features a flag-stone floor. The roof in this area is open up to the level of the truss collar and includes two adzed oak collar-trusses with pegged joints and low tie-beams. There is a stone chimney in the east wall that houses an early 20th-century open fire-grate. A ledged door leads into the parlour, which is currently used as a bedroom. The croglofft bedroom is situated above the parlour, where a former open front and ladder have been replaced by the lobby stair. There is also a ledged door that provides access to a rear outshut containing the kitchen and bathroom.
