Description
The County Primary School is a 19th-century building constructed of yellow brick, featuring rock-faced local stone shaley limestone quoins and dressings. It has a slate roof with perforated ridges. The main structure is positioned at right angles to the road and consists of a 3-bay hall, a 2-bay cross wing at the southern end, and a 2-storey entrance tower with a spire at the northeast corner. The entrance features a boarded door with iron hinges and perimeter studding set within a moulded pointed arch.
A prominent gable, slightly set forward, contains a 3-light window with lancets separated by colonettes and cinquefoils in the spandrels. There is a ventilator above the window and a stack with sloping shoulders on the side. The gable end of the wing also has a similar window and contains an additional classroom, complete with a terminal stack. The spire roof steps back to a louvred timber stage, which is arched at each section, topped with a pyramidal spire.
Inside, the building features an open raftered roof supported by two tiers of purlins, with trusses extended by wall posts to corbels. Scissor braces are present in the roof of the main range.
