Description
The Herbert Arms is a three-storey building constructed of colourwashed brick with a slate roof and gable end stacks. It features three bays and has a single-storey, two-bay addition on the west gable, which was converted from former garages. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door that is partly glazed and has an overlight, all set within a recessed doorcase. A 20th-century bracketed canopy is present above the entrance. The building has four-paned sash windows with moulded surrounds, and louvred false shutters were added in the 20th century. It also has wide eaves and verge details.
At the rear, there are three gables; the western gable dates from the 19th century, while the other two are from the 20th century. Inside, the main reception rooms on either side of the central lobby have high ceilings. There is a staircase, believed to be from the 18th century and of high quality, although it was not seen during the inspection in January 1996.
