Description
The Reading Room is a Grade II listed building constructed from rock-faced ashlar with freestone dressings and slate roofs. It features a central gable that has three tall lancet windows on the upper floor. On the ground floor, there are two doors with Caernarfon heads and overlights, symmetrically placed on either side of a window. Each door is topped with a gothic gabled canopy supported by terracotta figured corbels. The gable also includes a spherical triangular vent.
Flanking the central section are wings; to the left is the former police house, which has two bays with windows set in ashlar-quoined frames, flat label hoods with brackets, and part-raised dormers on the upper floor. The first bay on the right side is similar, while the second bay features a large loop vent and a JN monogram on a flush shield above. The building has yellow pots on the gable stacks and a rear extension on the southern wing. Behind the gabled front, there is a two-storey brick extension with applied timber framing.
