Description

Dol Ysgallog is a single-storey building featuring a three-bay range constructed with random stone on the front elevation and coursed block masonry on the west gable end. The rear retains some box-panelling. The building has a slate roof with raised copings on the gables. The front elevation includes a wide central entrance that originally served as a cart bay, now filled in with red brick and a planked door. There is a butt joint on the far right, which may indicate a former doorway. The gable ends have no openings, but there is a small vent on the south gable.

On the west (rear) side, there is a single doorway on the right leading into the cow-shed. Toward the center, there is a butt joint followed by an area of box-framing above a timber sill, with woven lath infill that likely provided ventilation to the barn. To the left, there is an open-sided two-bay range at right angles, probably a hay-shed, supported by rough timber posts with braces at the top and covered by a corrugated iron roof. The northwest angle of the barn has been cut away to allow access to both the barn and the hay-shed.

Inside, the building features a three-bay roof with simple tie-beam trusses. The central cart bay has a partition wall on the left side made of vertical timber posts and struts, which appears to be plastered above the tie-beam level, possibly connected to the earlier house. The south bay has a lower floor and a loft, with a manger against the partition wall. The wagon bay opens into the north bay, which contains a stone fireplace with a slightly cambered timber lintel at the end, and the chimney is truncated below the ridge level. A doorway on the west side connects the barn to the hay-shed.
